Tertiary Vocation Education and Training Division (TVET)

The role of TVET is to manage and facilitate the implementation of the:

· in-country training programmes

· and the Association of Cook Islands Tertiary Institutes (ACITI).

In-country training includes training for people in Rarotonga as well as the outer islands, although the main focus is on the outer islands.

The objective of the in-country training programme is to:

· provide vocational, trades, professional and second-chance training;

· improve the opportunities of all Cook Islanders to participate in the economy of the Cook Islands;

· contribute to the human resource development needs, particularly in areas of skills shortages.

· increased access to training, target groups are the outer islands, school leavers, the vulnerable and disadvantaged;

· provide training recognised and relevant to the social, economic and environmental context of the Cook Islands.

The In-country training programme is defined as a targeted training course that takes place entirely in the Cook Islands (including tutorials and study):

· For either public sector or private sector.

· University study through USP, UNITEC, Open Polytechnic of New Zealand and/or accredited overseas tertiary institutions or by correspondence and part of a recognised course are considered through this programme.

· University bridging courses

· In-country training is normally expected to refer to training for a group of students rather than for one-to-one tuition.
